Ghost In The Machine

Shine presents Ghost in the Machine, an exhibition of images and objects relating to Freud’s theory of the “Uncanny”.

Taken from the German “Unheimlich”, the Uncanny explores the premise of the familiar-made-unfamiliar and the anxieties this can provoke. Objects with anthropomorphic qualities, such as mannequins, statues, religious icons and taxidermy specimens often elicit these feelings due to intellectual uncertainty at whether the inanimate object actually has a consciousness. Such fears, when experienced in their most extreme form, may trigger repetitive compulsions, such as collecting and organising. These, according to Freud, are in themselves forms of uncanny behaviour; a manifestation of repressed trauma. Ghost in the Machine creates a space where we can consider our relationship with these objects taken out of context, and our reliance on the Symbolic order to maintain a sense of mental wellbeing.
